Tutor: Dan Feehely
We will investigate over 200 years of Queensland history, exploring the actions of settlers, colonists and modern Queenslanders in response to the presence of First Nations people, especially around Brisbane. We look at the times before 1824, the period of early contact, the removals of the late 19th century, and the response to growing First Nations recovery during the 20th century. Our purpose is to better understand where things sit today and what might produce positive change in the next era, through formal lessons, examination of documents, mini-lectures and group discussion.

Thursday 11.00am - 12.30pm. fortnightly. Classes start 17 July, finish 18 September.

I am a social worker and psychoanalytic psychotherapist and worked in child protection, my interest and experience comes from a social justice and humanitarian perspective. I have worked with Indigenous children and currently volunteer with Mob23 and FN Allies.
There will be invited lecturers with specific expertise during this Term 3 course.
Investigating contemporary issues by navigating First Nations and Western viewpoints in Queensland history.
About the Tutor:
I have taught Humanities - mainly History, Ancient and Modern - for 30 years in High Schools in 4 countries. I engaged in Aboriginal education from early in my career which led me to a life-long interest in Australia’s First Nations peoples role in our history. We will examine the European- Australian laws of the time in relation to First Nations' land ownership and its implications on issues faced in modern Australia. The course will provide the opportunity to sift through the evidence to arrive at your own conclusion.If you are a U3A Brisbane member you may enrol in this class online using the Enrol button below.
