H05 AN INTRODUCTION TO CORNISH HISTORY AND CULTURE

H05 is a 20 week course. In term 3, we will cover Part 1 of the course and ask the question: 'What Makes Cornwall Different?' We look at culture, language, ethnicity, religion and traditions and the relationships the Cornish people have had to the sea and to the mining industry. We also look at some of the literature that has formed our understanding of Cornwall and some of the places you might want to visit if you are planning to travel there.
Venue: 232 Adelaide St
Friday 11.00am - 12.15pm. Classes start 18 July, finish 19 September.
Cost: $50 (prepaid), 10 weeks

In Part 2 of the course we delve more into the defining events of Cornish history and learn how administrative, political and religious reform 'forced' Cornwall into becoming 'part of England'. In particular, we take a detailed look at the 16th Century, which is your tutor's particular area of expertise.

About the Tutor:

Cheryl HaydenDr Cheryl Hayden is a former teacher, journalist, media advisor and communications manager. She has spent the last 20 years researching and writing about her ancestral homeland, Cornwall, with particular interest in the Cornish response to the Reformation during the second half of the 16th Century, a topic which formed the basis for her PhD. Cheryl has published numerous short stories and academic papers, and one novel. Her most recent project has been the transcription of her grandfather's World War I diary, written during his service aboard HMAS Australia. This has been accessioned by museums in Australia and Scotland.
