J10 CHINESE - MANDARIN FOR BEGINNERS LEVEL 1

Tutor: Joe Smith
This is a year-long course by Zoom for those who haven't studied Chinese before. There is only one Zoom login for the whole year. Each class is recorded, so you don't have to worry about missing any. We will focus on spoken Mandarin, the national language of China. Worldwide it's the second most spoken language after English. This class will teach participants spoken phrases and vocabulary, plus the importance of using proper "tones". We will use Pinyin for writing, the phonetic system used, e.g. on computers, to get the Chinese characters. Term 4 will be revision. So, new students could join Term 4. 150-word vocabulary.
Wednesday 10.00am - 11.00am. Classes start 16 July, finish 17 September.
Cost: $25 (prepaid), 9 weeks
Current Enrolments: 11  (maximum 12)

Each lesson of the textbook has a spoken section followed by a written section. We will only do the spoken section in this course, but anyone is welcome to do the written section in their own time and ask me any questions.

There are 4 x 10-week terms with 2 weeks break between.

We will us the HSK curriculum, which is set by the Chinese Government and so, it can be credited to any study you may want to do in China.

A fairly good mastery of the tones and of the Pinyin system is expected before going to the next level.

About the Tutor:

I completed a major in Mandarin Chinese at UQ in 2004. I have studied a few languages and taught beginners' Thai in the main Brisbane Thai Buddhist Temple's Thai Cultural School, near Browns Plains. There I found out that the native primary school trained teachers, did not have experience teaching the tones, because they had only taught primary students, who were already fluent speakers. Thai and Chinese grammars are very similar and they are both tonal languages. I have kept up to 13 hives of bees for 7+ years.
