M03 POPULAR MUSIC SESSIONS

Tutor: Peter O'Reilly
Our main goal is to enjoy and explore music in the company of others. This is known to magnify the benefits of listening. We will take the opportunity to explore and learn a little about popular music (not 'Pop' music) history and the forms/genres that have emerged. This term we will be focusing on Jazz in all it's diversity. From Bebop, Cool Jazz and Hard Bop to Nordic Jazz, Nu-Jazz and Electric Swing. It's a lot! Fortnightly 4th and 2nd Tue of the month.
Venue: 232 Adelaide St
Tuesday 10.30am - 12.00pm. Fortnightly. Classes start 15 July, finish 16 September.
Cost: $25 (prepaid), 5 weeks
Current Enrolments: 6  (capacity 30)

Jazz will be a unifying theme/genre for this term. So what does that sound like?
Firstly we can follow Miles Davis and compatriots. He was instrumental in the development of four sub-genres of Jazz: Cool Jazz, Bebop, Hard Bop and Acid Jazz/Trip Hop. The last one managed to offend a lot of Jazz purists.
Secondly we can take some time to listen to some of the best women in Jazz. There's a lot! We'll have to skip some of the greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone at this point, partly because we already know them, we've done some Nina and they deserve their own time. We'll try Blossom Dearie, Madeleine Peyroux, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Reeves, Diana Krall, and new comer 'Laufey' Ln Bing Jnsdttir (Iceland). What about Joni Mitchell?
Next we'll move to Poland and Scandinavia for some Nordic Jazz. Yes Nordic Jazz is a thing! And the Polish Jazz scene is very vibrant - who knew! There's some reasons for all this.
Then we want to look at some music where jazz is present and fused to - Nu-Jazz, Electro Swing and even some pop music.

About the Tutor:

I studied and tutored Psychology at the University of Queensland before my professional career took me into behavioural and market research, business strategy, change management, negotiation (conflict) and more with a range of Government and private businesses. Throughout I enjoyed training people in communications, negotiation, change management, leadership, stress management, team development, business culture and more. My strength is as a generalist, both in terms of diagnosing situations and developing customised responses. Side projects included sports psychology, climbing, mountaineering and cycling. Underscoring everything has been the theory, application and sharing of psychology. Educating people in psychology for applied settings has been one of the joys of my career.
