E23 CLASS, GENDER AND RACE: DARK UNDERCURRENTS IN AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY?     NEW

Beginner
Tutor: Lawrence di Bartolo
Australians like to believe Australia is the greatest nation in the world. Many either choose to hide their heads in the sand (ignore) or deny some inconvenient possibilities. This course questions three assumptions regarding Australian society. First, that Australia is a classless society based on merit and equal opportunity. Second, gender inequality is on the decline despite ongoing high levels of violence against women. Third, our supposed embrace of multiculturalism hides a deep level of racism. Only an informed and critical engagement of these issues can lead to a more equal and just Australia.
