H18 Russian History, Literature and Culture

2026 is the first year of a three year cycle I take to cover the whole of Russian history, from earliest times up to the present. In this first year, I cover Russian history from the very earliest times up to the end of the eighteenth century, including the land before the coming of the Slavs, the first Russian state (Kievan Rus), the Mongol invasion, the fragmentation of the Russian lands, their regathering by Muscovy, Ivan the Terrible, the conquest of Siberia, the causes of the continuing fracture in today's Ukraine, Peter the Great, and up to the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-1796).
Venue: 232 Adelaide St
Tuesday 1.30pm - 2.45pm. Classes start 27 January, finish 31 March.
Cost: $50 (prepaid), 10 weeks

About the Tutor:

David TrumanDavid Truman has an honours degree from ANU in Russian Language and Literature and Political Science. He has spent extensive time in Russia in five visits, most recently for three weeks in mid-2019. David has also been to Indonesia at least six times since 2002, and has travelled through most of Java, Bali and also North Sulawesi in 2019 and 2020. At U3A he has tutored Russian language, history, literature and culture since 2004, and has been facilitating an Indonesian class since 2020. He is keenly interested in history and changes in society, and enjoys bushwalking, nature and classical music. He has a daughter and four grandchildren.
