Tutor: Margaret Hill
In 2026 we study two novels by Niall Williams,"This is Happiness" set in Faha, a village on the most westerly coast of Ireland, and"Time of the Child" set in the same village four years on. Williams' prose in these mature works is unique, powerful,subtle and descriptive. It is also compassionate and at times very funny. We move on to a very different village in Jane Austen's classic, "Emma." To close the year our choice will be between Ruth Ozeki's "A Tale for the Time Being" and Min Jin Lee's "Pachinko" All these novels deal with change.

Monday 9.30am - 11.00am. Classes start 2 February, finish 6 April.
Cost: $45 (prepaid), 9 weeks

About the Tutor:
I came to Brisbane in the early 1960's. Australia has been kind to me. It gave me the opportunity to move from school teaching, to tutoring in the English Department of Queensland University while studying for a M. Lit. Some years later, having completed a post-grad Social Work Degree, I trained with 'Relationships Australia '.
When I retired from this second, counselling career, we moved back to Brisbane and I enrolled at U3A as a student. This was such an enjoyable experience that I applied to join the group of volunteer tutors.
It is hard to believe this will be my 12th year of teaching 'Literature in Context'.
