S20 Plastics - Our Friend or Enemy

Tutor: Graeme George
The way that plastics are used and discarded has always been of concern but lately the problems of ocean pollution and the prevalence of microplastics have received close attention. If we are to understand these issues it is valuable to know the composition and properties of the different plastics that are used for good, as well as those that end up as pollution, since this provides a guide to how societal problems may be addressed in a balanced way. No prerequisite knowledge of chemistry or polymers is needed, and concepts will be introduced within an intuitive framework.
Venue: 232 Adelaide St
Thursday 9.30am - 10.45am. Classes start 29 January, finish 2 April.
Cost: $50 (prepaid), 10 weeks
Current Enrolments: 1  (capacity 16)

About the Tutor:

Graeme GeorgeI have been a researcher, teacher, and consultant for over 45 years on the chemistry, properties, and performance of polymers (plastics, coatings, rubbers, textiles, and composite materials) and the way that they perform when in different environments (including in the body). I look forward to sharing my experience with other U3A members.
