This course explores some of the most important ideas and events to emerge from Europe between 1700 and 1900. It was during this period that the foundations of modernity were laid down and consolidated. This course will consider the emergence of capitalism, the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment, and political ideologies including conservatism, liberalism and socialism. It draws on topics from A Brief History of the World Parts 2 and 3, so members who have done these courses have already covered the material.

Tuesday 1.00pm - 2.30pm. Classes started 27 January, finish 31 March.

About the Tutor:
Dr Robert Hogg has taught history at the University of Queensland, Griffith University, and the Australian Catholic University. He has taught Australian History, Australian Popular Culture, World History, Sex and Gender, European Fascism, Colonialism and Imperialism, and the European Union. He is the author of Men and Manliness on the Frontier: Queensland and British Columbia in the Mid-Nineteenth Century.Unfortunately this class is over-subscribed and no further enrolments can be accepted at this time.
