Term 2 2026

H48 Canada: The Other America

Tutor: Gary King
This class will return in Term 2, 2026. Canada: The "Other America" - A History of the USA's Northern Neighbour. Last year we traced Canada's history from its First Nations, to Early European contact, the rise & fall of New France, and how the colonies of British North America became the Dominion of Canada in 1867. However, as Canada's story is so deeply intertwined with the people & events with those to its south, we also tracked the growth & development of what became the United States of America. Join us as we pick up the tread from the end of the American Civil War and continue our journey into the 20th century.
District: Southside     Venue: Holland Park Library, 81 Seville Road, Holland Park
Friday 9.00am - 10.15am. Classes start 24 April, finish 26 June.

About the Tutor:

Gary KingBonjour! I’m a transplanted Canadian who left Ontario six years ago with his Australian wife, after 36 years in Canada. I worked as a French & History teacher in elementary schools, served as VP of the local teachers’ union, before I retired as a principal in 2013. Post school, I was a guide for school excursions to the USA – I was even in NYC the day after Mr. Trump won in 2016! I look forward to sharing my take on Canadian history and the five-plus centuries of interactions between us and our American cousins to the south. Bienvenue a H48!
