J17 Arabic for Beginners     NEW


Tutor: Michael Otago
This is a brand-new class requiring no prior knowledge of Arabic, one of the great world languages. We will focus on learning the shapes and sounds of letters in the Arabic alphabet, and on how to read, write, and pronounce simple words and phrases in Modern Standard Arabic, the formal 'high' form of Arabic used in books, newspapers, etc. In later classes we will also begin to learn one of the dominant spoken forms of Arabic - the Egyptian dialect.
Venue: 232 Adelaide St
Wednesday 11.30am - 12.45pm. Classes start 22 April, finish 24 June.
Cost: $50 (prepaid), 10 weeks

About the Tutor:

Michael undertook formal study of both the Egyptian dialect of Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic (the formal form of the language in which Arabic is written) in Cairo in 1981-82. He subsequently served as a diplomat in Australian embassies in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and as a Queensland Government trade representative in Qatar – a total of 9 years living and working in the Arab world.
