This 10-week course explores the origins of the Renaissance in Florence, examining the artists, ideas, and innovations that transformed the course of Western art. Through the cultural, political, and social history of the city, we will discover how pioneering figures such as Giotto, Masaccio, Donatello, Filippo Brunelleschi, and Fra Angelico developed new approaches to painting, sculpture, and architecture that would influence generations of artists across Europe. Along the way, we will explore some of the period's most celebrated works and consider the enduring legacy of Florence as the birthplace of the Renaissance.
