Everyone loves Cornwall, but what makes it so special? In Term 3 we start by taking a journey through the Cornwall we see and read about in popular culture: the Poldark series, Doc Martin, and the novels of writers such as Daphne du Maurier and Rosamund Pilcher. We visit Cornwall's ancient Celtic past, its language and culture, its famous tin and copper mines, the great migration to the 'new world' and the impact of the railway on the world of art and tourism.

Monday 11.00am - 12.15pm. Classes started 13 July, finish 14 September.

H05 is a 20-week course and in 2026 is being offered in terms 3 and 4. In term 4 we take a closer look at Cornwall's turbulent history.
About the Tutor:
Dr Cheryl Hayden is a former teacher, journalist, media advisor and communications manager. She has spent the last 20 years researching and writing about her ancestral homeland, Cornwall, with particular interest in the Cornish response to the Reformation during the second half of the 16th Century, a topic which formed the basis for her PhD. Cheryl has published numerous short stories and academic papers, and one novel. Her most recent project has been the transcription of her grandfather's World War I diary, written during his service aboard HMAS Australia. This has been accessioned by museums in Australia and Scotland.Unfortunately enrolments in this class have exceeded room capacity and no new enrolments can be accepted at this time.
