Tutor: Meredith Murray
This continuing series explores the development of Western thought through the study of ancient sacred traditions, early religious writings, and the philosophical ideas that shaped civilization for centuries. The first part of the course focuses on the history, interpretation, and cultural impact of important sacred texts and early religious traditions, encouraging participants to examine them with curiosity, critical thinking, and historical awareness. From there, we move into the Medieval world where philosophy, theology, and emerging ideas about reason, morality, free will, suffering, and human nature became deeply intertwined.
Thursday 1.45pm - 3.45pm. Classes started 16 July, finish 17 September.
Cost: $25 (prepaid), 10 weeks
Current Enrolments: 27

Along the way we encounter influential thinkers such as St Augustine, Hildegard of Bingen, Abelard and Thomas Aquinas while considering how ancient questions about meaning, truth, ethics, and self-understanding still resonate today.
Classes are relaxed, interactive, and suitable for both returning and newer members with no formal background required. We use clear slides, images, humour, discussion questions, and optional breakout chats to encourage thoughtful conversation and shared learning. Questions are emailed before each session for those who enjoy preparation, but participation is flexible - listen quietly, read aloud, and join in breakout discussions. Arrive early for a social catch-up, enjoy a short cuppa break with philosophy-themed cartoons. Finish time varies according to time taken in discussion. Post-session PDFs are provided. This is supportive, community-based learning where ideas are explored together with curiosity, respect, and good humour.
