J95 Topics in Linguistics

Tutor: Tom Mylne
Linguistics is the academic study of language, and covers a wide field. Topics we will touch on in the course include what language is, how it works, and how it forms part of a culture generally. We will look at some aspects of the grammar of English, but may also look at topics such as how language is used in practice, what is means, the structure of languages other than English, the sounds of languages, and so on. Please note: we will not discuss how to speak or write 'correct English'. Indeed we may challenge some of your beliefs about the grammar of English.
Venue: 288 Edward St
Friday 11.30am - 12.45pm. Classes start 9 October, finish 11 December.
Cost: $50 (prepaid), 10 weeks
Current Enrolments: 6  (maximum 10)

Please be aware that this is a continuing subject, and there will be people in the group who have been enrolled in previous terms. I will do my best to provide a pathway for new members to be able to appreciate the subject matter. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you think you might be interested, but are not sure what is involved.

About the Tutor: Tom Mylne

For the first 22 years of my working life I was an engineer working in the Queensland Public Service. I was retrenched from there, so I crossed the campus and obtained a degree in linguistics (the study of language). After teaching part time in that field for some fifteen years I returned to the full-time workforce and for the last seven years before I retired I taught linguistics to speech pathology students. I now regard myself as a historian, but I continue to be fascinated by linguistics.
