U09 Managing Grief and Loss     NEW

Tutor: Edward Blacklock
Most of us will already have experienced some level of loss in our lifetimes and the intense feeling of grief that follow. For many these subjects are often too hurtful to discuss openly. These talks are designed to create a safe place where grief can be talked about openly and come to see it as a normal and healthy expression of who we are as humans. We will be contrasting dysfunctional ways some people inadvertently use to manage their grief with functional strategies and the positive impact the latter have on our mental and physical health.
Venue: 288 Edward St
Monday 1.00pm - 2.30pm. Classes start 12 October, finish 7 December.
Cost: $45 (prepaid), 9 weeks
Current Enrolments: 4  (capacity 18)

The predominant model we will be using in these talks will be Elizabeth Kubler-Rosss Five Stages of Grief to better understand the traumatic effect grief can potentially have on our minds. We will mostly be looking at this subject from a Western cultural perspective but also comparing / contrasting it with other cultures and the differences in mental health outcomes. Finally, two forms of grief that are relatively uncommon, Complicated Grief and Delayed Grief, will be identified and discussed and both their implications to our long term mental and physical health.
