We will be discussing their historic diagnostic development from the lunatic asylums to the modern General Practitioner, who is now often the primary prescriber of these substances. Our discussion will also include the aetiology (the cause, origin or reason) of the conditions and their signs and symptoms.

These talks will include their diagnostic criteria under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders and their recommended managements under the Australian Medical Association and the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the different treatment styles Psychiatrists and Psychologists will use in the management of them. Both of these conditions have attracted over the years a wide range of therapeutic interventions, from the bizarre to the controversial. We will also discuss a range of alternative therapies that can be used, either in conjunction with prescribed medication or on their own.
