Ordinary People, Extraordinary ActsPresenter: Peter Baruch
Date: Thursday 31st October 2019, 2:00pm-3:30pm
Venue: 232 Adelaide St Room 16
Courage to Care is a celebration of people who chose to stand up and confront discrimination and injustice – ordinary people who were extraordinary in their bravery and impact. It is a positive program which uses examples from the past to plant the seeds of awareness, understanding and empathy for others. The program focusses on the legacy of some of the heroes of the Holocaust during the rise to power of the Nazi Party in Germany and during WW11. They honour people like the Australian Aborigine William Cooper, the Japanese Consul Chiune Sugihara, the Bosnian Moslem Dervis Kurkut, the Englishman Sir Nicolas Winton, the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg and the Danish Nation. History comes alive with deeper meaning through listening to the testimony of a Holocaust Survivor who tells us about the bravery of the people who played a role in her/his rescue and survival. Participants then get an opportunity to reflect on what the courage of these heroes can teach us today about standing up to discrimination and injustice - not to be bystanders, but to make a difference whenever possible.
Peter Baruch, a Sugihara child survivor with be telling his story on Thursday, October 31 at 2.00 pm.
