This is a continuing class which has been operating since Term 1, 2022. Class members are now familiar with the letters of the Arabic alphabet and their sounds, with the conjugation of some classes of verbs, and are able to translate and construct simple phrases and sentences in both Modern Standard Arabic (the formal language in which Arabic is written) and the Egyptian dialect of spoken Arabic. We will continue to build on this base in 2024.

Started in the 20th century, it is an international style that can be applied not only to architecture but to many aspects of design, including cinemas, furniture, fashion, jewellery and household appliances. The objective of the course is for participants to understand the background of the Art Deco style and to recognise Art Deco features in architecture and design.

This is a year-long course by Zoom for those who haven't studied Chinese before. There is only one Zoom login for the whole year. Each class is recorded, so you don't have to worry about missing any. I will show the textbook on screen in the class, so you don't need to buy it. We will focus on spoken Mandarin, the national language of China. Worldwide it's the second most spoken language after English. This class will teach participants spoken phrases and vocabulary, plus the importance of using proper "tones". We will use Pinyin for writing, which is the phonetic system used, e.g. on computers, to type the Chinese characters.

The history of the Jews and Israel is a fascinating investigation. For a people who have always been a small percentage of the world's population, they have made a disproportionate impact on society. We will look at the high points of history and the colourful range of customs and traditions that are held by the various people who identify as Jewish. The Law given by Moses has formed the basis of all Western systems of ethics, justice and social cohesion going back to the time of King Alfred the Great. Was the result of the recent referendum on 'the voice' an example of 'a fair go' or a triumph of fear and division over social justice? How about the response to COVID19 and might it help explain the rise of people such as Donald Trump? This course will examine Australian society from a variety of viewpoints based on set readings, practical exercises and robust discussion. The concept of meritocracy will form the basis for this course.
