Tutor: Laurie Gaffney
The aim of the course is to enrich our knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of both the language and the literature of the "golden age" of classical Latin. An underlying premise is that in a close study of the literature, a deeper knowledge and understanding of the language is to be found. There are two elements to the course: 1) an ongoing survey and study of the literature of the period from Cato to Juvenal and Apulius.studied in historical, political, and social contexts.(In Term 1 we'll read more Propertius and Horace, and Livy and Ovid). 2) the reading and reciting of Virgil's "Aeneid"(Books 6-7).

Tutor: Maureen Lillie
This is a fascinating century between the huge population loss caused by the Black Death and the discovery of the New World. There were changes to everyday life; the Wars of the Roses changed the ruling dynasty in England and new technology allowed ideas on science and religion to spread. Recent finds are causing a re-examination of the period and our ideas about it. Classes cover a wide range of subjects, both serious and light-hearted. Each class is self-contained, but over the year we will build a broad picture offering insights into life in those times. We will have some discussion at the end of each class.
